Site the Pool Relative to the House First

- What it does to the view from the house

Decide which trees are staying before the layout is fixed. That decision constrains the design more than most people expect.

Siting away from the house affects utilities, lighting, drainage and the path you will walk in bare feet several times a day. These are design considerations, not afterthoughts.

- Lighting along that route
- Where equipment will sit
- Where towels and storage live
- How maintenance access works
A well-designed approach is often what makes a distant pool feel like a destination rather than a chore.
Define an Edge So the Pool Does Not Float
In open ground a pool needs a defined zone around it, or it reads as an object with no context. Giving it an edge is what turns it into an outdoor room.
Ways to define the zone
- A generous deck with a clear boundary
- Massed planting on one or more sides
- A low wall or level change
- A structure such as a pergola
- A change in ground surface
This is the single most common thing missing from pools on large lots, and it is entirely a design decision rather than a budget one.
Plan the Approach
How you arrive at the pool shapes the experience of it. An approach that reveals the pool gradually feels considerably better than one that presents it all at once from the back door.
Worth designing
- Where the pool first becomes visible
- What frames the view on approach
- Whether the path is direct or turns
- Where the transition to the pool zone sits
- How the return to the house reads
None of this requires additional structure. It requires deciding the sequence rather than letting it happen by default.
